Al-Ma'aarij
Al-Ma'arij
The Ascending Stairways
Bismi Allah Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem
saela Sāil bi-adhabin vakie
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall-
Lil kafireen laysa dafie
The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,-
min Allah zee Alma'ariji
(A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent.
ta'rooju Al-mala'ika Wal-rooh ilayhi fay yaum kana Miqdāruhu hamsein Alif sana
The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years:
fasbir sabran jameel
Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment).
Innahum Yaravnah ba'eed
They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event):
and we see him kaariiban
But We see it (quite) near.
yaum ta-koo-noo As-samaa kalmuhli
The Day that the sky will be like molten brass,
wa takoonu Al-jibaalu kal-ih-nee
And the mountains will be like wool,
yasalu hameem Hameem
And no friend will ask after a friend,
yubassaroonahum yaw-dud Al-mujrimu Lau yaftadi azab Yawmeez bibeniye
Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children,
wasaahibateehi waakheeh
His wife and his brother,
Vefasilatihee Al-latee t'ewieh
His kindred who sheltered him,
Vaman fay Al-ard jami-an thumma Yoon-jee-heh
And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him:
Innaha Lazaa
By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!-
nezzah Lish-shawa
Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!-
tad'oo adbar
Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right).
wajama Fa'aw'a
And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)!
Inna Al-insan khulika halo'an
Truly man was created very impatient;-
eeza massahu Ash-sharr jazoo'an
Fretful when evil touches him;
wa iza massahu Al-khayr manuan
And niggardly when good reaches him;-
illa Al-musalleen
Not so those devoted to Prayer;-
Alladheena hum Ala salaatihim daaimoon
Those who remain steadfast to their prayer;
wal-latheena amwa faith Lehim Haqq
And those in whose wealth is a recognised right.
lil-sa-eel wal mahroomi
For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking);
wal-latheena yoo-sad-dee-koo-na bjeum ad-Deen
And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment;
wal-latheena azab mushfikoon
And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,-
Inna azab Rabbihim ghair ma'moon
For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;-
wal-latheena hum le-fu-ru-zhi-hem Hafizoon
And those who guard their chastity,
illa azwa faith Jehem ow ma malakat aymanuhum Fa-in-nahum ghair maloomeena
Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed,
faman ibtaghā Varaa dha faith leka Faulaik hum Al-adoon
But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;-
wal-latheena hum le-amanaatihim wa'hdihem ra faith aun
And those who respect their trusts and covenants;
wal-latheena Beshahada faith Tehem qa-imoona
And those who stand firm in their testimonies;
wal-latheena hum Ala salaatihim yoo-ha-fee-zoon
And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;-
ula-ika fay mukramoon
Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss).
femali Alladheena kafaroo kibalaka muhṭi'īn
Now what is the matter with the Unbelievers that they rush madly before thee-
ane Al-Yameen van Ash-Shimali izina
From the right and from the left, in crowds?
aya tma'u kullu imri minhum an yudhala Jannah Na'eem
Does every man of them long to enter the Garden of Bliss?
mimma yaalamoona
By no means! For We have created them out of the (base matter) they know!
Uqsimu berabbi Al-Mashāriqi Wal-magharibi Laqadirun
Now I do call to witness the Lord of all points in the East and the West that We can certainly-
an noobeddila khayran minhum vama nahnu bimasbookeena
Substitute for them better (men) than they; And We are not to be defeated (in Our Plan).
fadhruhum yakhudhu vayl'aboo hutta yelaqou yaw-ma-hoom al-ladhee yuoadoon
So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they encounter that Day of theirs which they have been promised!-
yaum yakhrujoon mina Al-aj-dath seraan ka'annahum ila noosub yoofeedhooan
The Day whereon they will issue from their sepulchres in sudden haste as if they were rushing to a goal-post (fixed for them),-
khashi'ah absaaruhum tar-ha-koo-hoom Dhillah dha faith leka Al-yawmu al-ladhee kanoo yuoadoon
Their eyes lowered in dejection,- ignominy covering them (all over)! such is the Day the which they are promised!
