Al-Alaq

Iqra besmi Rab-bik al-ladhee khalaq

Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-

khalaq Al-insan alakin

Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:

Iqra Wa rabbuka Al-akramu

Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-

al-ladhee allama Bil-kalami

He Who taught (the use of) the pen,-

allama Al-insan ma lam ya'lam

Taught man that which he knew not.

Inna Al-insan Laytagha

Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds,

an raahu Istagnia

In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.

Inna ila Rab-bik Ar-ruj'aa

Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all).

Araita al-ladhee yanha

Seest thou one who forbids-

abdan eeza Salla

A votary when he (turns) to pray?

Araita in kana alay Al-Huda

Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?-

ow amara Bil-takwa

Or enjoins Righteousness?

Araita in kazzaba wa tawalla

Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?

Alam be-anna Allah Yara

Knoweth he not that Allah doth see?

layin Lam jentaha Lanasfa'a be-nna-see-ya-ti

Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,-

nasiyah kathiba hatiyah

A lying, sinful forelock!

falidu Nadia

Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):

sandu Al-zabaniya

We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!

tooteeh wasjud Waqtarib

Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)!
